Professional footballers put on their kit and took out their wallets to take part in the inaugural IPAY2PLAY charity football tournament at Wembley Stadium Powerleague.
IPAY2PLAY is an event organized by Peterborough and DR Congo star Gabriel Zakuani and Papa Agyemang, former Ghana U21 player and founder of TeamIMANI. The tournament consisted of 4 teams, 3 of professional players and a corporate team (CHRIS ANDREWS JEWELS).
Various media houses came to support and raise awareness of the event, including Sky Sports, BBC Sport, Goal.com, Vox Africa TV,The Sun, The Voice Newspaper and many more.
Players involved on the day included Emmanuel Frimpong (Arsenal), Gabriel Zakuani (Peterborough United), Lomana Tresor LuaLua (Blackpool), Nile Ranger (Newcastle), Donervon Daniels (West Bromwich Albion), Albert Adomah (Bristol City), Eniola Aluko (England & Birmingham City ladies) and many more. Highlights on the day included Emmanuel Frimpong in Goal and Lomana LuaLua as referee of the tournament. Nile Ranger’s team emerged as champions of IPAY2PLAY.
Those who were unable to play on pitch showed their support from the sidelines. Gabriel Zakuani, was pleased with all of the support from fellow players on the day “I wanted to get all the boys together so we can help make a difference. We make a living doing this and it’s good to know we can raise awareness through football”
Other athletes in support of the event included Carlton Cole & Guy Demel (West Ham), Justin Hoyte (Middlesbrough), Aaron Mclean (Hull City), Leon Legge (Brentford), Derek Chisora (Boxer) and Udinese (Italian Serie A) star Kwadwo Asamoah amongst others.
